I went Mother's Day shopping today. I was supposed to go Thursday night, but I said I would stay and finish a case. I don't like to switch nurses on patients...I mean, I interviewed the patient, I established the connection between us, I've been in the case up to this point so I know what's going on. Plus, it was necrotizing fasciitis, so why expose more people to that than you need to?
Back to Mother's Day. I'm going to surprise my mama tomorrow :) Eric called me and asked to go in on a gift for her, and I always try to think of something that is both thought-out and practical. She needed an update from her old Swiss Colony outlet sale serving trays [I think they have drawings of beer bottles on them], so when I saw this tray at Crate and Barrel, I had the base of our "grilling out basket." I picked the bright green one.
Then it was off to Williams Sonoma [mmmm], where I knew I would find something delicious. I was all set to get the mango margarita mix, when I saw the Spicy Mango BBQ sauce. Here's what they say about it:
Caribbean-style Spicy Mango combines fresh mango and passion fruit with
tamarind, allspice and fiery habaƱero peppers. The result is a spicy complexity
with a hint of tropical sweetness that complements chicken or pork, as well as
seafood.
My next stop was the salon to get my unruly hair chopped off. I find that I get alternately bored and frustrated with it when it's long enough to be in a ponytail. Here's the new 'do. It's chin-length in the front and angles up to the hairline in the back. It's not as much of an angle as I've had before, but it's all right, and I figure it will make fitting it under a hat at work easier. And yes, this was taken in my bathroom.
I made a few stops on my way to Barnes and Noble, most embarrassingly American Eagle [hey, they have some cute, summery shirts], but I had to leave that store when they started playing of Montreal's "Id Engager" and I looked around at all the fake little 16 year olds and realized none of them had any idea what "Ladies/I'm screaming out to you/From the depths of this phallo-centric tyranny" meant. I did snag some classy pinstriped Bermudas on mega-sale at Gap and 2 shirts at Express for good measure. I'm saying YES to color :)
To round out Mom's gift, I was searching for a grilling cookbook that 1) had food that was easy to prepare and 2) had food that my family [okay, Dad] would eat. I ended up with Backyard Grilling from the fine people at Taste of Home.
I came home and wrapped it, Tux played with the bags, and now all that is left is to surprise Mom tomorrow!
peace and love,
m

You are a good daughter (and Eric's a good son too).
I plan on making my mother a card. I shall give it to her next weekend.
