breasts

"Oh god, there are too many breasts in this room." --Dr. L, as he looks up and realizes that everyone in the room is female except for him.

"Dr. L, breasts keep you in business!" --Jeanette and my response [he's a plastic surgeon].

And yes, I knew that title would be...titillating :)

saturday already?

And 11 on Saturday night at that?

Long, crazy week. Doesn't even feel like I had a day off [but I did, I did!].
  • Took care of a schizophrenic lady with a neck abscess who said she got it from a "man who is obsessed with her and bit her." Oh goodness.
  • Helped with a total femur replacement. Yes, you read that correctly...the patient now has metal from her hip to her knee in her left leg: hip replacement, metal rod as femur, knee replacement. Stay away from magnets!
  • Was told that my Spanish was pretty good. Accepted the compliment and kept a straight face! My Spanish? Good? AHAHAHAHAAHAHAAA!!
  • Asked who sung a certain song on the Top 40 station at work. When I asked why they expected me to know, was told, "You're the youngest in the room, you should know!" I'm the youngest in the whole damn OR, but that doesn't mean I can tell you who is singing the shit on the radio!
  • Was called "strong like bull.

And now it's time for that long missing segment, Saturday Picks! I've been baaaaaaaad about blogging on even a semi-regular basis. Oops. Here's to trying!

Book: On my day off, I started reading Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Jenn gave it to me for Christmas and I'm finally getting around to reading it. For those well-versed in romantic comedies, yes, it is the book in Serendipity. It tells the story of a man who pledged his undying love to a woman who eventually married someone else. Through all the years, the man kept his love for her, and returns to her life when her husband dies. The book has humor, history, love, and social commentary. I have a feeling that it will become a book that I reread often.

Music Obsession: my Bright Eyes station on Pandora. Last 3 songs: Masterfade by Andrew Bird, President of What? by Death Cab for Cutie, and The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel.

Picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/illonahaus/3012074849/ Absolutely adorable.

Covet: A new dresser. I can't post a link or pic, because I haven't found it yet. Needs to be: sleek, dark, modern, easy to clean.

peace and love,

giggle giggle

Maybe it's the wine speaking, the excitement of the end of the week, or the cute guy at work, but I'm very giggly tonight. I had to turn off The Daily Show because I was afraid my neighbors would think me crazy for all the laughing...but nevermind, I'm sure they do already--if not for the random giggles and off-key singing coming from this apartment, then at least for the neurotic kittycat that also lives here.

Speaking of Mr. Tux, he got really brave tonight, and actually ventured out of the apartment and made it halfway up the stairs to the 3rd floor before I caught him! He's never done that before. When I picked him up, he was shaking a little bit. The adventure up the stairs was too much for him. Such a scaredy cat!

Work wasn't bad today. After 4 AAAs in 2 days, we all deserved a slower day. It's looking like my necrotizing fasciitis patient isn't doing so well. He's still intubated and in the SICU. He came back today for a debridement and 2nd+3rd toe amputation. He's scheduled for a below-knee amputation on Monday. It's in his leg and arm and spreading. Doesn't look very good for him. Our schedule doesn't look too bad for tomorrow, but Dr. Steers and Ajay are notorious for finding transplants on Fridays. We'll see. I'm still trying to switch my call shift on Sunday so I can spend the weekend with the fam. Fedora is playing and Danielle is graduating with her MLS from UW-Madison.

i don't think that's what you were going for...

I wish I had someone riding with me tonight as I was coming home. There was a license plate that should be immortalized on the internets and I had no one to take a picture of it for me. I'll have to recreate it for you.

>>Here I am, driving down Prospect. I see a car with a personalized plate, but can't quite make it out. We meet up at the stoplight. Much to my surprise, it says "IPUTOUT."

[[[gives you a few seconds]]]

Yes, that's right, "I put out." I couldn't friggin' believe it. Who puts that on their license plate? So obviously, I'm quite intrigued by this person. Is it a bimbo blonde? Man candy? I peek up to the driver's side, where I am astonished to see a middle-aged woman--and a teenager in the passenger seat. Further confusion...WTF mate?!!

Then I noticed the window clings, and the hats in the rear window, and the license plate holder...the person is a FIREFIGHTER. It all makes sense now...kind of. I'm still rather confused on how you come to deciding "IPUTOUT" is a good choice for a personalized plate.

saturday, sa-tur-day!

extra points to those of you who got and sang ^that ^

I went Mother's Day shopping today. I was supposed to go Thursday night, but I said I would stay and finish a case. I don't like to switch nurses on patients...I mean, I interviewed the patient, I established the connection between us, I've been in the case up to this point so I know what's going on. Plus, it was necrotizing fasciitis, so why expose more people to that than you need to?

Back to Mother's Day. I'm going to surprise my mama tomorrow :) Eric called me and asked to go in on a gift for her, and I always try to think of something that is both thought-out and practical. She needed an update from her old Swiss Colony outlet sale serving trays [I think they have drawings of beer bottles on them], so when I saw this tray at Crate and Barrel, I had the base of our "grilling out basket." I picked the bright green one.

Then it was off to Williams Sonoma [mmmm], where I knew I would find something delicious. I was all set to get the mango margarita mix, when I saw the Spicy Mango BBQ sauce. Here's what they say about it:

Caribbean-style Spicy Mango combines fresh mango and passion fruit with
tamarind, allspice and fiery habaƱero peppers. The result is a spicy complexity
with a hint of tropical sweetness that complements chicken or pork, as well as
seafood.

My next stop was the salon to get my unruly hair chopped off. I find that I get alternately bored and frustrated with it when it's long enough to be in a ponytail. Here's the new 'do. It's chin-length in the front and angles up to the hairline in the back. It's not as much of an angle as I've had before, but it's all right, and I figure it will make fitting it under a hat at work easier. And yes, this was taken in my bathroom.

I made a few stops on my way to Barnes and Noble, most embarrassingly American Eagle [hey, they have some cute, summery shirts], but I had to leave that store when they started playing of Montreal's "Id Engager" and I looked around at all the fake little 16 year olds and realized none of them had any idea what "Ladies/I'm screaming out to you/From the depths of this phallo-centric tyranny" meant. I did snag some classy pinstriped Bermudas on mega-sale at Gap and 2 shirts at Express for good measure. I'm saying YES to color :)

To round out Mom's gift, I was searching for a grilling cookbook that 1) had food that was easy to prepare and 2) had food that my family [okay, Dad] would eat. I ended up with Backyard Grilling from the fine people at Taste of Home.

I came home and wrapped it, Tux played with the bags, and now all that is left is to surprise Mom tomorrow!

baptist funerals...eek

Really, that's all I can say. I knew going to the funeral that it was going to be a fair amount of fire and brimstone...I mean, it's a Baptist church, you're not going to have anything else. However, I was really disappointed that the service was 99% "accept Jesus as your Savior, or you're going to hell" and only 1% about my Uncle Wolf and his life. I actually found myself defending Catholicism--at least they know how to have a proper celebration of life! Aunt Sam gave a lot of personal stories about Wolf to the guy who did the eulogy, but there was no mention of them. I wouldn't even call it a eulogy! In fact, the only time he really mentioned my uncle was when he was talking about how Wolf was "born again" in the last few weeks of his life. I guess I just have to take comfort in knowing that I know the stories, and the people who loved him know the stories, and that is how his memory will live on.

You'll be happy to know that I behaved myself very well though :) I only made one comment during the service [when the preacher called chicks "baby chicks"....umm, what else are they?], and I was only caught rolling my eyes once. There were posters of everywhere they have missionaries, and one was in San Diego evangelizing to the Jewish community...so that got a derisive snort and eye roll, because you know, the Jews need to be saved...they're not the chosen people or anything ;)

In other news, pay day party night was Friday, and it was very fun even though it was very quiet. The taxi driver told Jeanette that people were staying in because of the H1N1 influenza. The bar we went to, Moct, definitely has the potential to be a very happening place when the weather is warmer and the doors can be open.
